After many years, you may find that your teak garden furniture will become a silver-grey colour, as opposed to the golden brown finish when you made a purchase. This leaves many people pondering whether to paint teak garden furniture, but is this really a good idea?

“Can I paint teak garden furniture?”

Put simply, painting teak garden furniture is never a good idea. There are two main reasons for this:

1. It is time-consuming

The process of painting your teak can be highly time-consuming and must be repeated each year to ensure your garden furniture looks presentable and ready for use whilst entertaining. This includes sanding down each piece of your garden furniture and giving it a few coats of paint until it reaches the desired colour and effect.

2. Teak does not paint well

The natural oil content of the teak wood will cause constant problems, which is why teak wood always has a penetrating type of oil used to preserve it and protect it. As a result, this means that no matter how much you clean and prepare your furniture for painting, it will probably require painting every year.

This is why it is advisable to avoid touching your teak garden furniture unless it is absolutely necessary. After all, why spend your precious time on maintaining your garden furniture if you do not have to?

If you really want to, there are a multitude of ways to restore your garden furniture without getting out the paintbrush. As a general rule of thumb, it’s important to remember that any kind of teak furniture – outdoors or indoors – is best cleaned and restored using products specifically designed for teak use.

Here are some of our top tips to make your furniture look as good as new without painting teak garden furniture:

– Treat it

Before and after

Many people prefer the “new” teak colour over the an aged and weathered one. Therefore, before thinking about painting your teak garden furniture, it is a good idea to treat it first. If you are on a tight budget, this is by far the cheapest option.

Instead of using teak oil which leaves furniture with an orangey appearance (commonly suggested by some websites), we recommend a quality silicone based teak sealant. Like the name suggests, it contains silicone rather than solvents, helping to seal the pores of the wood and prevent the greying process by protecting the wood from the bleaching effect caused by exposure to sunlight.

To do this, sand down your furniture and apply the teak sealant carefully over the furniture to protect it and get it looking as good as new in no time. This process will need to be repeated every few years to ensure your garden furniture looks presentable.

Buy new furniture

If you are still unhappy with your furniture, the easiest way to deal with this is to sell your weathered furniture. Despite the teak colour change, your garden furniture will still sell for a decent price because teak is always in high-demand, it is low-maintenance and lasts virtually forever.

With the money obtained from selling your old furniture, you can buy brand new furniture. Read our guide to purchasing no-maintenance garden furniture, or if you would like to purchase another set of teak garden furniture, be sure to browse through the Faraway Furniture website.
